Working with blocks

The block menu, drag and drop, multi-select, and undo.

Hover a block to show its gutter: a plus button that inserts an empty block below, and a grip handle for everything else.

The block menu

Click the grip for Move up, Move down, Duplicate, Turn into, and Delete. Turn into converts the block to another type and keeps its text.

Moving blocks

Drag the grip to move a block. Escape cancels the drag. Drop a block onto a two-column split to place it in the column under the pointer, or drag it out of a column to return it to the main flow.

Selecting blocks

Click a grip to select its block, then Ctrl-click or Shift-click to extend the selection, or drag from empty space to select everything the rectangle touches. Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on macOS) selects the text in the current block on the first press and every block in the note on the second.

Undo

Ctrl+Z undoes and Ctrl+Y redoes. A drag, a paste, a block conversion, or a run of typing each undo as one step.

Enter and Backspace

  • Enter on an empty list item ends the list.
  • Enter in a quote or code block adds a line. Enter on an empty line inside a quote ends the quote.
  • Backspace at the start of a formatted block turns it into plain text first, and merges it into the block above on the next press.
  • Ctrl+Enter inserts a plain line break anywhere.
